Advisory overview

Qualys Vulnerability R&D Lab has released new vulnerability checks in the Enterprise TruRisk Platform to protect organizations against 19 vulnerabilities that were fixed in 3 bulletins announced today by Adobe. Customers can immediately audit their networks for these and other new vulnerabilities by accessing their Qualys subscription. Visit Qualys Security Blog to prioritize remediation.

Vulnerability details

Adobe has released 3 security bulletins to fix newly discovered flaws in their software. Qualys has released the following checks for these new vulnerabilities:

  • Adobe Shockwave Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (APSB17-18)

    Description
    Adobe Shockwave Player is a multimedia player available for multiple platforms.

    This update addresses a critical memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution.

    Affected Versions:
    Adobe Shockwave Player 12.2.8.198 and earlier versions on the Windows operating system.

    Consequence

    Successful exploitation of this vulnerability will allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.

    Solution
    The vendor has released an update to resolve this issue. Adobe recommends that users install Shockwave Player version 12.2.9.199. The updated version is available for download at the Shockwave Player Download site.

    Description

    Adobe Digital Editions is an ebook reader software program from Adobe Systems built using Adobe Flash with support for acquiring, managing and reading eBooks, digital newspapers, and other digital publications. The software supports PDF, XHTML, and Flash-based content.

    Adobe Digital Editions is prone to multiple vulnerabilities that include Remote Code Execution, Privilege Escalation and Stack Overflow.

    Affected Version:
    Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.4 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh

    Consequence

    Depending on the vulnerability exploited, an attacker can execute arbitrary code on the system, escalate privileges or disclose memory addresses.

    Solution

    Adobe has released a patch to fix this vulnerability. User are advised to upgrade to the latest version of software available. The latest version can be downloaded from here

    Description
    Adobe Flash Player is a Cross-platform plugin plays animations, videos and sound files in .SWF format.

    These vulnerabilities that could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. ( CVE-2017-3076, CVE-2017-3077, CVE-2017-3078, CVE-2017-3079, CVE-2017-3082,CVE-2017-3075, CVE-2017-3081, CVE-2017-3083, CVE-2017-3084)

    Affected Versions:
    Adobe Flash Player 25.0.0.171 and earlier.

    Consequence
    Successful exploitation allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system.
    Solution
    Customers are advised to refer to APSB17-17 for updates pertaining to this vulnerability.

These new vulnerability checks are included in Qualys vulnerability signature 2.4.62-3. Each Qualys account is automatically updated with the latest vulnerability signatures as they become available. To view the vulnerability signature version in your account, from the Qualys Help menu, select the About tab.

Selective Scan Instructions Using Qualys

To perform a selective vulnerability scan, configure a scan profile to use the following options:

  1. Ensure access to TCP ports 135 and 139 are available.
  2. Enable Windows Authentication (specify Authentication Records).
  3. Enable the following Qualys IDs:
    • 370427
    • 370426
    • 370425
  4. If you would like the scan to return the Windows Hostname, also include QID 82044 and ensure access to UDP port 137 is available.
  5. If you would like to be notified if Qualys is unable to log on to a host (if Authentication fails), also include QID 105015.

In addition, prior to running a scan for these new vulnerabilities, you can estimate your exposure to these new threats by running the Risk Analysis Report, available from the Qualys Vulnerability Management Reports tab.
