Microsoft Windows Task Scheduler Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS14-054)
- Severity
- Serious 3
- Qualys ID
- 90975
- Vendor Reference
- MS14-054
- CVE Reference
- CVE-2014-4074
- CVSS Scores
- Base 7.2 / Temporal 5.3
- Description
-
Task Scheduler is a Windows service that enables the automation of routine tasks on a chosen computer. Task Scheduler does this by monitoring the criteria the user has chosen for initiating tasks (referred to as triggers) and then executing the tasks when the criteria has been met. For more information, see the MSDN Library entry.
An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in how Windows Task Scheduler improperly conducts integrity checks on tasks.
This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, and Windows RT 8.1.
- Consequence
- By crafting a special task file, a restricted user can gain administrator and SYSTEM privileges. An attacker will need a local user's account to exploit this vulnerability.
- Solution
-
Refer to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS14-054 for further details.

- Description
-
Microsoft Internet Explorer is a graphical web browser developed by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows operating systems.
- An information disclosure vulnerability exists in Internet Explorer. This vulnerability is caused when the XMLDOM ActiveX control allows local resources to be enumerated.
- Remote code execution vulnerabilities exist when Internet Explorer improperly accesses objects in memory.
This security update is rated Critical.
- Consequence
- An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
- Solution
-
Please refer to MS14-052 for more details.
Workaround:
- Configure Internet Explorer to prompt before running Active Scripting or to disable Active Scripting in the Internet and Local intranet security zone.
- Set Internet and Local intranet security zone settings to "High" to block ActiveX Controls and Active Scripting in these zones.Patches:
