Advisory overview

Qualys Vulnerability R&D Lab has released new vulnerability checks in the Enterprise TruRisk Platform to protect organizations against 14 vulnerabilities that were fixed in 3 bulletins announced today by Adobe. Customers can immediately audit their networks for these and other new vulnerabilities by accessing their Qualys subscription. Visit Qualys Security Blog to prioritize remediation.

Adobe has released 3 security bulletins to fix newly discovered flaws in their software. Qualys has released the following checks for these new vulnerabilities:

    Description
    Adobe Flash Player is a multimedia application for multiple platforms.

    Adobe has released security updates for Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR which resolve memory corruption vulnerabilities that could lead to code execution (CVE-2013-3361, CVE-2013-3362, CVE-2013-3363, CVE-2013-5324).

    Affected Versions:
    Adobe Flash Player 11.8.800.94 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh
    Adobe AIR 3.8.0.870 and earlier versions for Windows
    Adobe AIR 3.8.0.910 and earlier versions for Macintosh

    Consequence
    Exploitation could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.
    Solution
    The vendor has released updates to fix the vulnerabilities. Refer to Adobe advisory APSB13-21 for further details.

    Description
    Adobe Reader and Acrobat are applications for handling PDF files.
    Adobe Reader and Acrobat are prone to a variety of memory corruption vulnerabilities.

    Affected Software:
    Adobe Reader XI 11.0.03 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh
    Adobe Reader X 10.1.7 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh
    Adobe Acrobat XI 11.0.03 and earlier for Windows and Macintosh

    Consequence
    The vulnerabilities could cause a crash or could lead to code execution.
    Solution
    Users on Windows and Macintosh systems can utilize the Adobe product's update mechanism. The default configuration is set to run automatic update checks on a regular schedule. Update checks can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check for Updates.

  • Adobe Shockwave Player Memory Corruption Vulnerability (APSB13-23)

    Description
    Adobe Shockwave Player is a multimedia player available for multiple platforms.

    This update resolves a memory corruption vulnerability that could lead to code execution.

    Affected Versions:
    Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0.3.133 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh.

    Consequence
    This update addresses vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker, who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities, to run malicious code on the affected system.
    Solution
    The vendor has released an update to resolve this issue. Adobe recommends Shockwave Player users install Shockwave Player version 12.0.4.144. The updated version is available for download at the Shockwave Player Download site.

These new vulnerability checks are included in Qualys vulnerability signature 2.2.528-4. Each Qualys account is automatically updated with the latest vulnerability signatures as they become available. To view the vulnerability signature version in your account, from the Qualys Help menu, select the About tab.

Selective Scan Instructions Using Qualys

To perform a selective vulnerability scan, configure a scan profile to use the following options:

  1. Ensure access to TCP ports 135 and 139 are available.
  2. Enable Windows Authentication (specify Authentication Records).
  3. Enable the following Qualys IDs:
    • 121447
    • 121442
    • 121448
  4. If you would like the scan to return the Windows Hostname, also include QID 82044 and ensure access to UDP port 137 is available.
  5. If you would like to be notified if Qualys is unable to log on to a host (if Authentication fails), also include QID 105015.

In addition, prior to running a scan for these new vulnerabilities, you can estimate your exposure to these new threats by running the Risk Analysis Report, available from the Qualys Vulnerability Management Reports tab.
