Oracle Security Bulletin: April 2010

Advisory Overview

Qualys® Vulnerability R&D Lab has released new vulnerability checks in the Qualys Cloud Platform to protect organizations against 11 vulnerabilities that were fixed in 4 bulletins announced today by Oracle. Customers can immediately audit their networks for these and other new vulnerabilities by accessing their Qualys subscription. Visit our blog to see how to prioritize remediation.

Vulnerability Details

Oracle has released 4 security bulletins to fix newly discovered flaws in their software. Qualys has released the following checks for these new vulnerabilities:

  • Solaris Trusted Extensions Component Security Vulnerability (1020726.1)

    Description
    This vulnerability corresponds to the Sun Product Suite security fixes included in the Oracle Critical Patch Update for April 2010.

    The Trusted Extensions component of the Solaris and OpenSolaris products are affected.

    Consequence
    Successful exploitation allows local users to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors related to Trusted Extensions.

    Description
    Oracle released a Critical Patch Update advisory for April 2010 that addresses 7 security vulnerabilities.

    The following Oracle database components are affected:
    - Oracle Internet Directory
    - Core RDBMS
    - JavaVM
    - XML DB
    - Change Data Capture
    - Audit

    Consequence
    Successful exploitation allows attackers to execute arbitrary code.

    None of these vulnerabilities may be remotely exploitable without authentication, that is none may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password.

    Solution
    Oracle recommends that customers upgrade to the latest supported version of Oracle products in order to obtain the patches. Read Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - APRIL 2010 for further information about the products affected and issues addressed.

    Description
    This vulnerability corresponds to the Sun Product Suite security fixes included in the Oracle Critical Patch Update for April 2010.

    The kernel component of the Solaris and OpenSolaris products are affected.

    Consequence
    This vulnerability can also be used to cause a limited denial of service in the form of interruptions in resource availability.

  • Solaris "/dev/ucode" Component Security Vulnerability (1021799.1)

    Description
    This vulnerability corresponds to the Sun Product Suite security fixes included in the Oracle Critical Patch Update for April 2010.

    The /dev/ucode component of the Solaris and OpenSolaris products are affected.

    Consequence
    Successful exploitation allows local users to cause a denial of service via a request with a 0 size value to the UCODE_GET_VERSION IOCTL, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference in the ucode_get_rev function, related to retrieval of the microcode revision.
    Solution
    Refer to Oracle ID 1021799.1 to address this issue and obtain patch information.

These new vulnerability checks are included in Qualys vulnerability signature 1.26.41-2. Each Qualys account is automatically updated with the latest vulnerability signatures as they become available. To view the vulnerability signature version in your account, from the Qualys Help menu, select the About tab.

Selective Scan Instructions Using Qualys

To perform a selective vulnerability scan, configure a scan profile to use the following options:

  1. Ensure access to TCP ports 135 and 139 are available.
  2. Enable Windows Authentication (specify Authentication Records).
  3. Enable the following Qualys IDs:
    • 117822
    • 19548
    • 117819
    • 117820
  4. If you would like the scan to return the Windows Hostname, also include QID 82044 and ensure access to UDP port 137 is available.
  5. If you would like to be notified if Qualys is unable to log on to a host (if Authentication fails), also include QID 105015.

In addition, prior to running a scan for these new vulnerabilities, you can estimate your exposure to these new threats by running the Risk Analysis Report, available from the Qualys Vulnerability Management Reports tab.
