Vulnerability details
Microsoft has released 3 security bulletins to fix newly discovered flaws in their software. Qualys has released the following checks for these new vulnerabilities:
-
Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-052)
- Severity
- Serious 3
- Qualys ID
- 115407
- Vendor Reference
- MS06-052
- CVE Reference
- CVE-2006-3442
- CVSS Scores
- Base 7.6 / Temporal 5.6
- Description
-
Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) is a reliable and scalable multicast protocol that enables receivers to detect loss, request retransmission of lost data, or notify an application of unrecoverable loss.
PGM is prone to a remote code execution vulnerability due to invalid memory access in the Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) multicast protocol implementation in Windows XP.
- Consequence
- Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to send a specially-crafted multicast message and execute code on the target host.
- Solution
-

Windows Indexing Service Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability (MS06-053)
- Severity
- Serious 3
- Qualys ID
- 90350
- Vendor Reference
- MS06-053
- CVE Reference
- CVE-2006-0032
- CVSS Scores
- Base 4.3 / Temporal 3.4
- Description
- Windows Indexing service is exposed to an information disclosure issue in the Indexing Service because of the way that it handles query validation. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to run client side script on behalf of a user. The script could spoof content, disclose information, or take any action that the user could take on the affected Web site.
- Consequence
- A successful attacker can gain complete control of the remote Web site.

Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-054)
- Severity
- Critical 4
- Qualys ID
- 110042
- Vendor Reference
- MS06-054
- CVE Reference
- CVE-2006-0001
- CVSS Scores
- Base 9.3 / Temporal 7.3
- Description
- A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Publisher. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability when Publisher parses a file with a malformed string. Publisher does not perform sufficient data validation when processing the contents of a .pub file. When Publisher opens a specially-crafted Publisher file and parses a malformed string, it may corrupt system memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code.
- Consequence
- An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system.
