Advisory overview
Qualys Vulnerability R&D Lab has released new vulnerability checks in the Enterprise TruRisk Platform to protect organizations against 5 vulnerabilities that were fixed in 2 bulletins announced today by Microsoft. Customers can immediately audit their networks for these and other new vulnerabilities by accessing their Qualys subscription. Visit Qualys Security Blog to prioritize remediation.

The target Microsoft Windows system is missing an Internet Explorer cumulative patch described in Microsoft advisory MS05-054. This patch fixes four different security vulnerabilities:
File Download Dialog Manipulation Vulnerability - CAN-2005-2829
HTTPS Proxy Vulnerability - CAN-2005-2830
COM Object Instantiation Memory Corruption Vulnerability - CAN-2005-2831
Mismatched Document Object Model Objects Memory Corruption Vulnerability - CAN-2005-1790Public exploits are available for some of these vulnerabilities.

The target system is affected by a privilege elevation issue in the Windows kernel that was fixed in a patch included in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-055. Specifically, a privilege elevation vulnerability exists in the way that asynchronous procedure calls are processed within the Windows kernel.
An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users.

- This vulnerability could allow a logged on user to take complete control of the system.

Selective Scan Instructions Using Qualys
To perform a selective vulnerability scan, configure a scan profile to use the following options:
- Ensure access to TCP ports 135 and 139 are available.
- Enable Windows Authentication (specify Authentication Records).

Enable the following Qualys IDs:
- 100032
- 90286
- If you would like the scan to return the Windows Hostname, also include QID 82044 and ensure access to UDP port 137 is available.
- If you would like to be notified if Qualys is unable to log on to a host (if Authentication fails), also include QID 105015.
In addition, prior to running a scan for these new vulnerabilities, you can estimate your exposure to these new threats by running the Risk Analysis Report, available from the Qualys Vulnerability Management Reports tab.
