Qualys Introduces New Intranet Scanner Appliance

Secure Appliance Provides Enterprises with Unified Management of Internal and External Vulnerabilities, and Extends the Accuracy and Ease of the QualysGuard Service Inside the Firewall

Redwood City, CA — September 30, 2002 — Qualys™, Inc., the leader in Managed Vulnerability Assessment, today introduced its new QualysGuard™ Intranet Scanner, providing security audits and network mapping inside the corporate firewall. The Intranet Scanner is a network appliance that enables companies to scan internal hosts, servers, and devices and alert network managers to vulnerabilities and internal threats.

The Intranet Scanner functions as an extended and integrated part of the QualysGuard Managed Vulnerability Assessment infrastructure. Combining Qualys’ fully automated Web platform, with its proprietary Inference-Based Scanning Engine, QualysGuard enables enterprises to more accurately identify and prioritize vulnerabilities, eliminate false positives and quickly remedy security weaknesses, on both sides of the firewall. The service simplifies the management of vulnerabilities by helping network administrators focus on the most important vulnerabilities that affect their networks.

“Now, in addition to helping us manage our Internet security, Qualys has solved the challenge of cost-effectively automating the vulnerability assessment process inside the firewall with its Intranet Scanner appliance,” said Deefay Young, Senior Network Security Analyst, Adobe Systems. “It’s a snap to install, requires no maintenance or special skills to operate, and is constantly up-to-date with the latest vulnerability signatures. Qualys has taken extreme measures to ensure security at the box, at the network connection, and during data uploads/downloads.”

The QualysGuard Intranet Scanner is the first solution for vulnerability assessment that gives administrators automated, Web-based audit capabilities for internal networks. The service provides the “inside” perspective visible to internal hackers and disgruntled employees, and enables enterprises to identify and remedy vulnerabilities that can be exploited by these groups from inside the firewall. To detect and resolve vulnerabilities, QualysGuard’s Inference-Based Scanning Engine assesses each system against its proprietary KnowledgeBase, the industry’s most comprehensive and up-to-date vulnerability database, containing nearly 2000 vulnerability signatures for over 300 applications on more than 20 operating systems, and updated daily as new vulnerabilities emerge.

With the QualysGuard Intranet Scanner, customers can run unlimited vulnerability audits from any Web browser, as well as visually map network topology and create customized reports with trend analysis. The scanner provides a proprietary, expert systems-based interface engine for network discovery and security analysis, as well as automatic updates with the latest vulnerability signatures, and remote maintenance and system health checks that require no user intervention.

“With the widespread adoption of wireless access points and VPNs, internal threats now pose an even greater risk to the corporate network,” stated Richard Stiennon, Research Director, Gartner Inc. “Scanning for vulnerabilities inside the firewall will be essential to keeping a network safe from internally-launched attacks, and a key consideration for most companies will be the integration of vulnerability management both inside and outside the firewall. Companies are looking for solutions that are integrated, comprehensive and easy to deploy.”

The QualysGuard Intranet Scanner appliance is a compact, stand-alone or rack mountable 1U-chassis appliance capable of scanning 5000 devices per day. This headless appliance requires no external keyboard or monitor for configuration and operation. The device is configured through an integrated keypad and LCD panel interface, and is hardened to provide complete security to its environment.

“As network threats continue to grow within the enterprise, Qualys has evolved its service offering to meet the security needs of its customers and partners,” stated Philippe Courtot, Chairman and CEO of Qualys. “With the introduction of QualysGuard Intranet Scanner, companies are now able to leverage the QualysGuard security infrastructure to scan and secure both internal and perimeter network devices and hosts. As a fully automated, Web-service approach, enterprises can ensure the highest standard for vulnerability assessment throughout their corporation without having to dedicate expensive resources.”

The QualysGuard Intranet Scanner will be available to customers October 15, 2002. Qualys will be demonstrating the Intranet Scanner at the RSA Conference in Paris, France October 7-10, 2002. Qualys is located at booth number 118/119.
