Network Security Innovator Gerhard Eschelbeck Joins Qualys As Vice President of Engineering

Former Network Associates and McAfee Engineering Chief

San Jose, Calif. — May 14, 2001 — Qualys, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise network vulnerability assessment and monitoring solutions, today announced that security management expert Gerhard Eschelbeck has joined the company as vice president of engineering. Mr. Eschelbeck was most recently senior vice president of engineering, security products at Network Associates and, prior to that, vice president of engineering, anti-virus products at McAfee Associates.

Reporting to Qualys chairman and CEO, Philippe Courtot, Mr. Eschelbeck brings a dozen years experience and thought-leadership in remote security management technologies to Qualys. Qualys recently raised $20 million in its second round of financing and the addition of Mr. Eschelbeck to its management team further positions the two-year old company for its next phase of growth, according to Mr. Courtot.

“Gerhard Eschelbeck is a highly visible figure in the field of remote security management and intrusion detection,” said Courtot. “His insights, inventiveness and engineering management track record will prove invaluable as Managed Security Providers (MSPs) and other security professionals continue to turn to the Qualys vulnerability assessment and monitoring platform as the basis for new-generation global security auditing services.”

The Qualys platform enables businesses to continuously audit their networks via the Internet to detect security vulnerabilities and assess risks. It is the first global scanning infrastructure to enable MSPs to quickly build online vulnerability assessment and monitoring services into their security offerings.

“The security marketplace is rapidly embracing the type of remote auditing technologies pioneered by Qualys,” said Eschelbeck. “Already a multi-national company with an innovative engineering team and a blue-chip roster of customers and investors, Qualys has the right foundation for a successful company in a fast growing industry.”

Eschelbeck has written extensively on managed security issues and has numerous patents pending. In addition to his work at McAfee and Network Associates, he founded IDS GmbH (subsequently acquired by McAfee) and was a research scientist at the University of Linz, Austria where he teaches regularly in the field of network security. He holds Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science from Johannes Kepler University, Austria.
