Microsoft Security Bulletin: Multiple Security Vulnerabilities
Advisory Overview
September 12, 2006 – Qualys® Vulnerability R&D Lab has released new vulnerability checks in QualysGuard® to protect organizations against the 3 new vulnerabilities present in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office that were announced today. Customers can immediately audit their networks for these and other new vulnerabilities by accessing their QualysGuard subscription.
Vulnerability Details
Microsoft has released 3 security patches to fix 3 newly discovered flaws in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.Qualys has released the following checks for these new vulnerabilities:
| Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) Could Allow Remote Code Execution |
|---|
| SEVERITY: Serious |
| QUALYS ID: 115407 |
| VENDOR REFERENCE: MS06-052 | 919007 |
| CVE REFERENCE: CVE- 2006-3442 |
| CVSS SCORES: Base 7/ Temporal 5.2 |
| THREAT: Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) is a reliable and scalable multicast protocol that enables receivers to detect loss, request retransmission of lost data, or notify an application of unrecoverable loss.
PGM is prone to a remote code execution vulnerability due to an invalid memory access in the Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) multicast protocol implementation in Windows XP. |
| IMPACT: Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to send a specially-crafted multicast message and execute code on the target host. |
| SOLUTION: Microsoft has released security bulletin MS06-052 to address this vulnerability.
Microsoft has rated this issue as Important. |
| Vulnerability in Indexing Service Could Allow Cross-Site Scripting |
|---|
| SEVERITY: Serious |
| QUALYS ID: 90350 |
| VENDOR REFERENCE: MS06-053 | 920685 |
| CVE REFERENCE: CVE-2006-0032 |
| CVSS SCORES: Base 3.4/ Temporal 2.5 |
| THREAT: Windows Indexing service is exposed to information disclosure issue in the Indexing Service because of the way that it handles query validation. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to run client side script on behalf of a user. The script could spoof content, disclose information, or take any action that the user could take on the affected Web site. |
| IMPACT: A successful attacker can gain complete control of the remote Web site. |
| SOLUTION: Microsoft has released security bulletin MS06-053 to address this issue.
Microsoft has rated this issue as Moderate. |
| Vulnerability in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution |
|---|
| SEVERITY: Critical |
| QUALYS ID: 110042 |
| VENDOR REFERENCE: MS06-054 | 910729 |
| CVE REFERENCE: CVE- 2006-0001 |
| CVSS SCORES: Base 8/ Temporal 5.9 |
| THREAT: A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Publisher. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability when Publisher parses a file with a malformed string. Publisher does not perform sufficient data validation when processing the contents of a .pub file. When Publisher opens a specially crafted Publisher file and parses a malformed string, it may corrupt system memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code. |
| IMPACT: An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system. |
| SOLUTION: Microsoft has released MS06-054 to address this issue.
Microsoft has rated this update as Critical |
This new vulnerability check is included in Qualys vulnerability signatures v1.15.50-5. Each QualysGuard account is automatically updated with the latest vulnerability signatures as they become available. To view the vulnerability signature version in your account, from the QualysGuard HOME menu, select the Account Info tab.
SELECTIVE SCAN INSTRUCTIONS USING QUALYSGUARD:
To perform a selective vulnerability scan, configure a scan profile to use the following options:
- Ensure access to TCP ports 135 and 139 are available.
- Enable Windows Authentication (specify Authentication Records).
- Enable the following Qualys IDs:
- 115407
- 90350
- 110042
- If you would like the scan to return the Windows Hostname, also include QID 82044 and ensure access to UDP port 137 is available.
- If you would like to be notified if QualysGuard is unable to logon to a host (if Authentication fails), also include QID 105015.
In addition, prior to running a scan for these new vulnerabilities, you can estimate your exposure to these new threats by running the Risk Matrix Report, available from the QualysGuard HOME page.
